2.The Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP)

The Leadership Alliance Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP), offers undergraduates, interested in pursuing a PhD or MD-PhD, the opportunity to work for eight to ten weeks under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor at a participating Alliance institution. Through this one-on-one collaboration, students gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation. The SR-EIP is designed to encourage students from groups traditionally underrepresented in the sciences, social sciences and humanities to consider research careers in the academic, public or private sectors. Students are required to present a written report and/or abstract at the end of their summer research activity and complete a program evaluation. All participants are expected to make oral or poster presentations of their research at the Leadership Alliance’s annual, national symposium. This all expense paid summer internship provides students with a competitive stipend, travel and housing.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign offers a summer research program that provides undergraduate students from populations underrepresented in graduate study at Illinois with an opportunity to explore careers in research. The program at Illinois provides each student with an experience that will help strengthen his or her knowledge, skills, and understanding of graduate school. The many activities offered through the Summer Research Opportunities Program will afford participants an opportunity to establish important relationships with faculty in their respective fields of study, conduct graduate-level research under the supervision of a University of Illinois renowned faculty member, become acquainted with the culture of graduate school, and to learn what is needed and expected of them as graduate students in their discipline at the University of Illinois.

10. PREP summer program at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

The Psychology Research Experience Program (PREP) provides intensive mentoring and experience in scientific research and professional development to undergraduates from historically underrepresented populations – racial and ethnic students of color, low socio-economic status, and first-generation college students – who have expressed and demonstrated an interest in a career in scientific psychology. PREP features a balance of mentored laboratory research (approximately 30 hours/week) and a curriculum of scientific instruction, professional development and networking opportunities. It is supported by the National Science Foundation through its Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) mechanism.

11. Oklahoma State University REU Site: Biological Basis of Human and Animal Behavior

The goal of this program is to provide 12 undergraduate students with an in-depth, hands-on research experience focused on the biological basis of human and animal behavior. Students will be trained in the application of the scientific method to develop hypotheses, design and conduct research studies involving either animal or human subjects.  Students will also be trained in the responsible conduct of research. Students will be mentored by full-time, Ph.D.-level faculty members who are tenured/tenure-track faculty with strong programs of research.

12. Michigan State University: SROP

The Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is a gateway to graduate education at Michigan State University (MSU). The goal of the program is to increase the number of domestic undergraduate students who pursue graduate study and careers in teaching and research at colleges and universities. MSU SROP helps prepare undergraduate students for graduate study through intensive research experiences with faculty mentors and academic enrichment activities.

14. The Center for Children and Families at Florida International University

The Center for Children and Families at Florida International University announces internship positions for the 2016 Summer Treatment Program. The Summer Treatment Program (STP) provides services to children with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Conduct Disorder, Oppositional-Defiant Disorder, learning problems, and related behavior problems. The program provides treatment tailored to children’s individual behavioral and learning difficulties.

Positions are available for Lead Counselors, Counselors, Teachers, and Classroom Aides. Interns will work in one of three related programs: STP-PreK, for children in preschool or entering Kindergarten; STP-E, for children ages 6-12 in elementary school; or STP-A, for adolescents in middle school and high school.

Room, board, and travel expenses are not covered by the internship. Each summer, there are many STP staff members from outside the Miami area who are interested in finding roommates. Once accepted to a position, staff members will have the opportunity to join a Facebook group to meet and communicate with other staff members to make housing and carpool arrangements.

15. The Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) (Columbia University)

The Summer Public Health Scholars Program (SPHSP) is designed for undergraduate students to increase interest in and knowledge of public health and biomedical science careers. SPHSP is a partnership of Columbia University’s College of Physicians and SurgeonsCollege of Dental MedicineSchool of Nursing, and the Mailman School of Public Health. Together they represent the broad spectrum of public health practice. SPHSP grant funding was awarded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Office of Minority Health, and Health Equity (OMHHE).

The program is designed for undergraduates going into their junior or senior year and recent baccalaureate degree students who are undecided about their career goals. This is a rigorous program which includes Public Health course work at Columbia University; hands-on field experience and immersion in a diverse, economically disadvantaged urban environment; seminars and lectures with public health leaders; and mentoring by faculty members, ensuring students’ exposure to the breadth and importance of public health as a career option.

16. The University of Michigan Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP)

The University of Michigan Summer Research Opportunity Program (SROP) offers outstanding undergraduates in a variety of disciplines who are underrepresented in their field of study the opportunity to conduct intensive research. The goal is to prepare students for advanced studies in a Ph.D. program at U-M.

Students work in graduate level research projects with faculty and current graduate students. In addition, all participants engage in a series of academic, professional, and personal development seminars. Participants present their research at a concluding U-M research symposium. Students in SROP build professional and personal networks that support their interest in joining the academic community.
